About ANU Kendo Club

The ANU Kendo Club has been teaching the Japanese martial art of kendo in Canberra since 1978, making it one of the longest-running clubs of its kind in the region. Operating under ANU Sport at the Australian National University in Acton, the club is dedicated to kendo, often called "the way of the sword," a discipline that traces its roots to the samurai and is built around the principles of the katana.

Kendo at ANU is open to men and women of all ages, who train and compete together in a shared, inclusive environment. The club places strong emphasis on welcoming newcomers, running dedicated beginners' courses that introduce the fundamentals of footwork, etiquette and swordsmanship before students progress into regular training and, eventually, competition.

Beyond physical fitness, kendo offers a path toward focus, discipline and self-improvement that has drawn practitioners for generations. With affiliations to local, national and international kendo organisations, the ANU Kendo Club connects its members to a wider community, giving Canberra students and residents a genuine and well-established place to take up the art.
